Checking out the RPG Creation Kit Unity Asset Demo

I tried the RPG Creation Kit (Unity Asset Store link: RPG Creation Kit). The demo was a poor man's Elder Scrolls Oblivion styled game. Seeing as this was a demo and not a game, it's amazing to see one person develop many systems found within Bethesda's Oblivion.

The problem with the asset, from what I saw from the demo, is that it is a perfect kit for setting up Oblivion games, but not Fallout NV, 3, 4 or Skyrim clones. Even with the upcoming gun update, there simply isn't enough to the kit to be $100 for users who wish to make more than Oblivion clones. Now, if you are looking to build Oblivion clones, this kit is perfect for you and well worth the money.

However, I prefer the modern feeling that Skyrim and Fallout 4 offer (leaving the inventories alone in this review). RCK (RPG Creation Kit), offers features like Rck AI, character builder, quest and dialogue builder, world cells, etc. It also offers an Oblivion-like spell system. It's also seen as an all-in-one kit, so a save system, inventory, character controller, and other main systems are built-in. As nice as this is for designers, it's less nice when a developer can't easily plug in their own code because the kit is tightly coupled with its own systems (granted, I did not have access to the source code, this is just estimating based on the features list and demo).

So, final conclusion:

Building an Oblivion clone? Worth it.

Building any other game? Not worth it. It has the potential to build games like Skyrim and Fallout (World Cell System, Rck AI, etc.), but lacks in certain areas.
